    1 drawing - sheets 1, 4, 6 & 8 are watermarked with the letters "V E I C" quartered within a spade design ; 10 of the individual sheets measure c. 53 cm each in length - the last sheet is 23.4 cm long; 35.9 x 580 cm total length - pencil on 11 sheets of paper, backed onto linen. Sheets 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 & 10 are watermarked "J Whatman 1814 & W Balston"

  • General note

    "J Whatman 1814 & W Balston"
    Dated from presence of Hospital, built in 1821; and from absence of buildings on Hunter's Island causeway. Building on Hunter's Island began in 1822.
    Previous Library officers have suggested the panorama is by George William Evans. Evans was in Hobart in 1821 and 1822; he was also in Sydney in 1824 (see Sydney Gazette 19 August 1824 p.2), the date of another closely related panorama, "Panoramic View of the Town and Harbour of Sydney New South Wales", at Pxx 62 Dixson Library. However the drawing bears very little stylistic resemblance to Evans' watercolours.
