Charles Buttrose, (1909-1999), journalist, was born in Adelaide and studied at the Elder Conservatorium. Buttrose began his newspaper career as proofreader for the ‘The News’ in Adelaide, later covering state and federal politics for Melbourne’s Sun –Pictorial and Sydney Morning Herald . In 1944, he left Australia for New York, where he joined the Australian News and Information Bureau, and met Australian soprano Marjorie Lawrence. Returning to newspapers in New York, he became foreign correspondent for Sydney’s Daily Mirror, a publication he edited from 1951-1954, and then chief editorial writer on the Daily Telegraph. After a long association with ABC orchestras, in 1957 he joined the national broadcaster as federal supervisor of publicity and the following year became director of publicity and concerts. His work there took him back to the United States in 1967 at the height of the Vietnam War. In 1974, Buttrose became the ABC’s assistant general manager before retiring that same year, from which time he worked for six years in executive posts for the Australia Council.
