Information from NSW Government Printer - Engraving by H. Penkwell, from painting by J.A. Gilfillan.
This image is based on a painting, "Captain Cook Taking Possession of New South Wales, 1770", by John Alexander Gilfillan, which he probably painted in the later half of the 1850s. He presented the painting to the Royal Society of Victoria in 1859. A coloured wood engraving (engraved by Samuel Calvert) of the painting was published in the December issue of the Illustrated Sydney News, while the Mitchell Library owns of copy of it at ML 648.
