  Presumably worked up from a field sketch by Mitchell done on his exploratory journey to Victoria in 1836. His description of the country around Mount Arapiles appears in Three Expeditions into the Interior of Eastern Australia; with Descriptions of the Recently Explored Region of Australia Felix... vol. II, T. & W. Boone, London, 1838, pp. 188--91. A lithograph from an original drawing by Mitchell, "Mitre Rock and Lake, from Mt. Arapiles", vol. II, pl. 31, opp. p. 188, relates closely to the watercolour.
