  • General note

Title incised on back where ""Wedgwood"" has been impressed.
Based on a medallion or wax portrait of Cook modelled by John Flaxman in 1784, after a medal designed by Lewis Pingo in 1784 or earlier, it resembles Nathaniel Dance-Holland (1735-1811) painting, held at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England.
The date of Flaxman's model is confirmed by E. Meteyard who states that he modelled Captain Cook in 1784. -- Reference: Wedgwood and his works : A selection of his plaques, cameos, medallions, vases, etc. From the designs of Flaxman and others .... E. Meteyard. London : Bell and Daldy, York Street, Covent Garden, 1873
Llewellynn Jewitt quotes Flaxman's account to Wedgwood, dated 24 Jan. 1784, for a model in wax of Captain Cook. -- Reference: Jewitt's ceramic art of Great Britain, 1800-1900; [revised] by Geoffrey A. Godden, L. Jewitt. London, Barrie and Jenkins, 1972.
