• ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
  
  Jane Jarvis, born in 1772, was the youngest daughter of Thomas Jarvis, the Chief Justice and Member of Council of the island of Antigua. Jane met Lachlan Macquarie in Bombay in November 1792 while whe was acting as companion to her sister Dorothea and married him the following year. They bought a house at Calicut, south of Bombay on the Malabar coast, which they named "Staffa House" and settled into domestic routine and regimental responsibilities.
