    Objects - 6.9 x 5.4 cm., portrait, inside frame (sight) - 7.4 x 6 cm., frame, 88.5 cm. chain - 1 watercolour on ivory miniature in gold frame with glass front, gold casing on reverse, knotted rope-like design around outside of frame, and a loop for hanging at centre top of frame. Brown coloured human hair, plaited into a chain with five clasps or joins accompanies the frame.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Eber Bunker was a master mariner and landholder who has been credited with being the "father of Australian whaling". In 1791 he visited New South Wales as master of the "William and Ann", accompanied the "Lady Nelson" in the "Albion" to establish the Derwent settlement in 1803. Bunker brought his family to the Colony in the "Elizabeth" in August 1806 and became a landholder at Bulanaming, Bankstown and the Hunter Valley. -- Reference: Colonial Secretary Index, 1788-1825, State Records New South Wales, Online Jan. 2004

    The male in this portrait wears a white waistcoat and white linen ruffled shirt each with stand collars, a white stock at neckline, and a navy blue wool double-breasted jacket with brass buttons.

    It is difficult to ascertain whether the chain made of hair is contemporary with the frame.
    Accompanying the portrait is a non-contemporaneous bakelite rectangular label with black print, "Capt. Eber Bunker. Presented by Miss S.J. Cartwright"
