  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Yulgilbar was the property of Edward D. S. Ogilvie, having taken up land on the Clarence River in 1840. His 'castle', built from local serpentine and sandstone, was completed in 1866. For further information see: Squatter's Castle / by George Farwell (1973).
    Artist Edward Baker Boulton (1812-1895) was a sketcher, watercolourist and grazier who came to NSW in 1836 and took up land at Walcha. He made frequent excursions from his property to draw landscapes. His Australian views were much admired in his lifetime, displayed in various exhibitions including the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879 (Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography / by Joan Kerr).

    Said to have been painted at the request of Mr Ogilvie, who did not like the painting and it was then purchased by Mr Busby who was staying at Yulgilbar (information from donor).
