  • General note

The portrait of Sir Joseph Banks was first modelled by John Flaxman Jnr. between 1775-1779. It is difficult to assign specific dates to the medallions as several issues were made over a period of time.
The portrait is cracked from the neck down.
The medallion is similar to one held in the Dixson Galleries collection (DL Pa 100) and several in the Mitchell Library (P*33 black basalt ware, P*34, P*35, P*55, P*61). The frame is also of a similar style to that of the portrait medallions located at P*31 and P*34.
    Attributed to John Flaxman.
