    Head and shoulders profile of man with hair loosely tied with a ribbon, facing to the right, with leaf and flowers [Forstera Sedifolia] above chest.

    Affixed to mount on reverse of fame, ""Old Wedgwood. / XVIIIth Century Art. / F. Rathbone [printed] / .fred Place West, / South Kensington. [handwritten]""
    On a paper label on reverse of plaque, ""H / 226"" refers to the number assigned by the Australian Museum.
    A similar white on blue jasper ware medallion portrait of Johann Reinhold Forster, without the sprig of foliage, is located in the Mitchell Library collection at P*56. Additionally, within the Dixson Library collection is a white on green dip jasper ware medallion at DL Pa 92.

    Dated, titled, and attributed from inscription around the outside of the frame (in an, unknown hand): ""Johan Reinhold Forster, L.L.D. Naturalist and traveller, born at Dirschaw, Polish Prussia 1729. Professor of Natural History at Warrington Academy 1779. Accompanied Captain Cook in his second / Voyage around the world as a naturalist. On his return in 1775 ...""
