John Oxley was Surveyor-General of New South Wales, 1812-1828. He was appointed by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1817 to lead an expedition to trace the course of the Lachlan River.
Sir William Dixson was a notable collector of Australiana and Fred Wymark was a director of the bookdealer and publisher, Angus & Robertson.
  • Scope and Content
Transcript of incomplete diary (24 pp.) relates part of an expedition to explore the region south-west of Bathurst and to ascertain the course of the Lachlan River which had been discovered two years previously. Begins at Queen Charlotte Valley near the Lachlan River and breaks off where the party had to leave the river because of impassable marshes and head towards the coast. Describes in detail geographical features of the country passed through and assesses its future potential as farming land.

Typed transcript was originally enclosed with letter received from Sir William Dixson, 30 July 1904, attached to title page. Dixson cites in the letter: 'Mr [Frederick] Wymark has seen the original & wanted it for you but you can quite understand that I would not let it go...'.
