    By 1800 masters of ships coming into Sydney Harbour were required to post a bond of several hundred pounds not to carry convicts away without the governor's permission.
    Reuben Brumley was captain of the Hope.
  • Scope and Content
    In 1801 Governor Philip Gidley King, at the request of the Governor General of India, emended part regulations to require ships' bonds to be entered into by departing vessels to prevent the landing of ex-convicts from Australia in the East India Company's settlements and in China.

    The bond is for the sum of 800 pounds and is signed by Reuben Bromley. Co-signatories, in the sum of 100 pounds, are Simeon Lord and James Underwood, merchants of Sydney.
