  • General note

LIBNET was the electronic messaging service for [chiefly] NSW libraries, based on the OTC/Telecom KEYLINK system. Applications included instant messaging and correspondence directly via online mailboxes for interlibrary loans, book and serial orders, reference enquiries, publicity, news, telexes, and local and overseas database access - ABN, DIALOG, ORBIT and more.
The predecessor to LIBNET was the Minerva Library Network for the electronic transmission of inter-library loan messages (Library Council of New South Wales Annual Reports, 1985-1986 & 1986-1987)
In its first year, 1987/1988, 52% of requests were received by LIBNET, with approx. 30% the previous year (Library Council of New South Wales Annual Report, 1987-1988)
By 1989 LIBNET became the subscription service available from the business enterprise of the State Library of NSW, ILANET, which gave its members access to a range of information services in an electronic format. ILANET's access to document suppliers made ILANET an InterLibrary loan facilitator. The ILANET website provided information on who used ILANET, how to subscribe and what you got when you subscribed. -- Information from the Australian Government Culture and Recreation Portal (online)
By 1995-1996, NSW.net was rolled out to replace the NSW public library X.25 network (ILANET) with Internet based communications -- information from NSW.net : setting the Net to secure the future of NSW public libraries, SLNSW website (online)
