  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1909, Dr George Vivers began constructing a 3 storey castle at Kings Plains, his family property in Glen Innes NSW first settled in 1832, to woo his Scottish bride [Irene Marks] out to Australia. Unfortunately, she only stayed in the country a couple of years. During this time George Lambert was to paint Mrs Vivers portrait at least twice, the other being 'Lady with a fan (Mrs George Vivers)'. According to Lambert's records, (ref: ML MSS 97/10, 434) "... my next two sitters are charming females, one a Mrs. Vivers who used to be the beautiful Irene Marks". Mrs Vivers did not like the portrait and, as Lambert felt it was an accurate likenesss & chose not to alter it, she decided not to take possession - hence its passing to the Mitchell Library as part of the collection acquired from Lambert's widow in 1931.
