  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Captain Walter Synnot (1773-1851) from the 66th Regiment of Foot (Berkshire) served with the regiment in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Jamaica. Retired and migrated to South Africa in 1820, returned to Ireland in 1825. He arrived in Tasmania in 1826 with his third wife Mary Jane, nee Mather. Following his death Mary Jane married Charles Macarthur (son of Hannibal Macarthur and Anna Maria, the eldest daughter of Philip Gidley King). The collection was received from their granddaughter

  • Scope and Content
    includes sketches by Walter Synnot, his mother Jane, Lady Synnot, Charles Macarthur, F.R. Nixon Bishop of Tasmania, and many others.

    ITEM 01
    Miscellanous sketches, etchings, photographs, photomechanical prints and posters, ca.1810-1914. Sketches include scenes in Ireland, mostly unidentified. Artists include Jane, Lady Synnot, C. W. Macarthur, Marcus Synnot, Charles B. Cumberland and scenes of the 66th Regiment in Newfoundland by Captain W. Synnot 1851.

    Photographs include a group portrait of a Synnot wedding in Melbourne, Launceston Fire Brigade, Strathmore Tasmania and sailing ship on the Derwent River.

    Scrapbook, ca. 1826-1870, possibly belonging to Polly King includes postcards, drawings, photograph of Camden Park, hair, signatures with 19th century verse and extracts.

    Signed drawings by W. Synnot of the 66th Regiment include botanical and bird sketches from Cape of Good Hope and Tasmania ; portraits
    drawings of 3 officers from the 96th Regiment ; watercolour drawing of the Great Comet, dated 6 March 1843 V.D.L.

    Other artists include Bishop of Tasmania F. Nixon, Charles Macarthur and Jane, Lady Synnot.

    Photographs include a group portrait, house in Launceston Tasmania, Strathmore Tasmania, Government House Sydney, Commercial Bank Sydney 1871, Lord Loftus and guard of honour, Calcutta natives.

    Scrapbook, ca. 1844-1881, possibly belonging to Agnes B. MacArthur, includes drawings, photographs, postcards, Tasmanian seaweeds, signatures with 19th century verse and extracts.

    Drawings by Charles Macarthur of scenes on the Murray 1851, Holmes & Bawtrees Station on the Murray below Echuca 1851. Other identified artists are Lambert Gordon and Marcus Hungerford. Also drawings of Queenbeyan 1845; Concord on Parramatta River 1844 and sailing ships.
