    1 painting - diameter 36.8 cm, on base diameter 66.4 cm - oil on canvas, inset in papier mache table top
  • Scope and Content
    The painting forms the centre-piece of a black japanned, papier mache top of folding tea table. The roundel is bordered by inlaid mother-of-pearl in triangle and diamond design with long flower stem in applied gold transfer and encircled by gothic leaf pattern in gold transfer. The top has serpentine edging formed from Gothic ogee arches. Reverse has bracket and hook

    Title in brushpoint at lower centre

    This table top with others (see under Terry, Frederick Charles, after) belongs to a genre in vogue between the 1840's and the 1870's. It was probably manufactured in England and the oil painting added in Australia, either on to a blank space or onto an earlier painting, now obliterated.

    The painting is probably a copy of F.C. Terry's lithograph 'St. Phillip's Church, Church Hill, St. Patrick's Church' No. 20, in his 'Landscape Scenery' [Australian Keepsake 1855], Sydney, Sands & Kenny, 1855, but it is unlikely that it is Terry's work. Dated from publication
