  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    In 1868 the First Lord of the Admiralty reduced the number of ships on foreign stations. These reductions were compensated by the formation of successive "Flying Squadrons" (or "Detached Squadrons") of unarmoured screw ships which undertook extended world-wide cruises for training and flag waving.

    41 photographs of: "The Detached Squadron, Under the command of Vice-Admiral the Right Honorable the Earl of Clanwilliam, C.B., Taken in Port Jackson, Sydney, New South Wales, 29 July 1881."
    Ships of the squadron were Inconstant (flag ship), Cleopatra, Carysfort, Bacchante and Tourmaline.
