  • Scope and Content
Cover title reads '240 Mineral and Topographical Survey of the Five Northern Districts. New South Wales. By J. Calbert 1845'. The number "240" does not correspond with anything in Hodgson's catalogue of the sale of Calvert books, 1924, at 980C. or in the Catalogue of Books, Maps, Pamphlets, etc. collected by Mr George Calvert, 1920 at Q 980C. The cover title applies to a MS. which had been inserted in front of the volume and which is entitled 'Description of a map of the five northern districts beyond the boundary of location in New South words cut out and replaced by strips of paper 1844 1845 & 1846'. In another MS. of the Description at A 175 the phrase 'by William Gardner' appears in the position from which words have been cut out. The name of W. Gardner is also crossed out on page 37. A statement by A. Wallace in 'Jottings referring to the early discovery of gold in Australia and some remarks relative to the veteran gold miner John Calvert' pages 506 relating to Calvert's preparation of a map of the five northern counties is apparently based on the belief that the whole volume is the work of Calvert

The first two leaves of the Descriptive Catalogue of rocks have been torn out. This catalogue is probably by John Calvert but the writing cannot be checked in M.L. February 1956. No such catalogue can be traced in the Mitchell Library Catalogue of Printed Books. Catalogue of items run from 110 to 226. There are many notes relating to gold especially in the Bathurst area. Bookplate is that of Calvert Lord Baltimore.

Portraits of John Calvert, the Baroness de Baltimore and a print entitled 'The Run for Gold' January 1850, all of which were received with the volume have been inserted on blank pages at the end of the MS.
