    Acquired by donors from the Allport family
  • Scope and Content
    Collection comprises two sketchbooks of views in Wales and Westmorland, ca. 1811-1815. The pencil, watercolour, and ink drawings include views of the Lake District in north-west England; views in North Wales including the Snowdonia region; rural views; and sketches of animals, buildings, towns, and villages, possibly done during a sketching tour.

    Includes sketches of Abergele[?]; probably Carnarvon [i.e. Caernarfon] Castle; Rhuddlan; and Kynmael Park or Kinmael Park [i.e. Kinmel Park].
    The back pages of sketchbook contain a list of names and amounts.

    Includes sketches of Milnthorpe; Kendal; Pooley Bridge; Patterdale; Ulswater; Gobarrow [i.e. Gowbarrow] Park; Patterdale Church; Ambleside; Ambleside Mill; Grasmere; Waterfalls at Sir M. le Flemings [probably waterfalls at Rydal Hall, Ambleside]; Castle Carag, St Johns Vale; Elter Walter [i.e. Elterwater]; Langdale; Lowood [i.e. Low Wood?]; Langdale Pikes; Windermere; Keswick; Furness[?] Abbey; Dalton; Coniston; Coniston Water; Derwent Water; Penrith; and Kendal Castle.
    Sketches made in 1815 include views of Corwen; Rhydlan fair [i.e. Rhydlanfair?]; on the Conway [i.e. Conwy]; Snowdon from Capel Cerig – day group[?]; and Ulswater.

    Front end page inscribed in pencil ‘Westmorland’ and in ink 'No. 13 [crossed out in ink and pencil] 1814 - W. Glover / No 14 – also 1815 N. Wales / with Wm. Glover’ and ‘H. C. Allport / Aldridge / near Lichfield / Staffordshire / begun June 23rd 1814’.
