• ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
  
  Ludwig Leichhardt was born in Germany and migrated in New South Wales in 1842, and for two years studied natural history in the Moreton Bay District. In 1844, he led a successful expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington; a second expedition led by him and whose aim was to cross the continent from east to west, was a failure and a third with the same object in 1848 ended in the disappearance of the whole party.
