  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Captain John Piper (1773-1851) arrived in New South Wales in 1792 as an ensign in the New South Wales Corps. He was Commandant at Norfolk Island from 1805-1810. In 1813 he was appointed to the civilian post of Naval Officer, a remunerative position which included the collection of customs duties. Piper was forced in 1827 to sell most of his property and after an official investigation found that the collection of customs had been mismanaged, Piper resigned his post in April 1828. He retired with his family to Alloway Bank near Bathurst.

Elizabeth Garling was the eldest child of Frederick Garling and his first wife Elizabeth. Born in London in 1802, she came to Sydney in 1820 on the ship Claudine. In 1831 she married George Hemming Stuart.

Mary Honora Brooks was the daughter of Richard and Christiana Brooks of Denham Court near Liverpool. She married William Wilson in 1828 and George Wardell in 1838.

    W. H. MacKenzie was an official with the Bank of Australia.
