Sir Henry Brown Hayes, 1762-1832 convict adventurer, belonged to a respectable and wealthy family in Cork. He was knighted in 1790. In 1801, he was sentenced to death for kidnapping and forcibly marrying his victim, but the sentence was commuted to transportation for life. He arrived in New South Wales on the Atlas in July 1802. He built Vaucluse House, Sydney, and lived there until he returned to Ireland in 1812. - Description source
