  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Batman, born at Parramatta, New South Wales, moved to Tasmania, and became a grazier. In 1835, he founded the Port Phillip Association and purchased from the aborigines, a large tract of land on which Melbourne was established

  • Scope and Content
    Correspondence and other papers regarding the settlement of Melbourne and the ill-treatment of Aborigines

    Photocopies of originals in the Dixson collection, being part of the Tasmanian Archives, which were returned to Tasmania in 1962

    Includes copies of the Melbourne and Geelong deeds ceding 500,000 and 100,000 acres respectively to Batman, by the Aborigines. These copies were contemporary copies of the original deeds, and were sent by Batman to the Governor of Van Diemen's Land.

    Correspondents include John Batman, John Wedge and the Colonial Secretary of New South Wales
