- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
Charles Thomas Philipe Ulm, 1897-1934, aviator, was born in Melbourne, and saw service overseas in World War I, when he qualified as a pilot. In 1919, Ulm returned to Australia, and with Charles Kingsford Smith broke the round Australia flight record. In 1928, they made the first Pacific crossing from the United States to Brisbane in the Southern Cross. In 1928, they also flew non-stop from Victoria to Perth, and to New Zealand and back. In 1929 Ulm flew to England in the Southern Cross, with Kingsford Smith, and during 1931 he organized the first all-Australian air mail flight to England and return. In June 1933 Ulm flew Faith in Australia from Australia to England on the proposed round the world flight, but after a mishap in Ireland, had to cancel the remainder of the flight and returned to Australia via Asia. In December, he flew from Australia to New Zealand carrying the first Tasman air passengers, also taking the first official air mail to New Zealand in April 1934. Ulm was lost in December 1934 on a flight between California and Australia - Finding AidsContents list available in the Mitchell Library Reading Room -
