  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The journal is probably written by the Dawson's son, John, who celebrated his 16th birthday on board.

William Dawson, migrated to Sydney in 1832 on the Diana, arriving on May 25, 1833. As the Diana was a female immigration ship it is assumed he worked his passage. In 1835 his parents, John and Mary followed on the Canton sponsored by Mrs Scott of Bunker’s Hill. The Canton was one of the London Emigration Committee’s ships carrying free female passengers to aid in balancing the gender differences within the colony. Four of the Dawson girls, namely Mary, Jane, Fanny & Charlotte, were part of the scheme. Sons John, Thomas & Henry Hockney were aboard also.

Arrival of the Canton, WITH FEMALE EMIGRANTS The ship Canton, with two hundred and thirty-three Female Emigrants, arrived on Thursday afternoon. She sailed from Plymouth, May 20th. The Small-pox has broken out on board the vessel, and two persons died of that disorder, in consequence of which, the Canton, has been ordered into quarantine persons were employed yesterday afternoon in fumigating the mail which will be landed this morning, and if it contains news of importance, we shall lay it before our readers.
