    Paul Eggert, born 1951, is an editorial theorist, scholarly editor, and book historian in the discipline of English literature. He is employed as an Australian Research Council professorial fellow at UNSW Canberra, has been a fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities since 1998, and served as the general editor of Academy Editions of Australian Literature. He received the Centenary Medal for services to the study of literature in 2003.

  • Scope and Content
    This collection forms the basis of Professor Paul Eggert’s writing for ‘Biography of the book’ (2013) and ‘While the billy boils: the original newspaper versions’ (2013).

    Development of the edition: 52 folders, each representing one of the stories or sketches published in ‘While the billy boils’ in 1896. Each folder contains: photocopies of the relevant collated versions in newspapers, magazines, ‘Short stories in prose and verse’ (1894), ‘While the billy boils’ (1896), and ‘The country where I come from (1901); transcriptions in ASCII format; computer collations of each version. Box 3 1-13, Box 4 14-30, Box 5 31-52.

    Typesetters copy of the completed edition: front matter by Eggert, and each story represented by a transcription of the copy text (deriving from mid-1990s work) marked up by Sherlock, then by Eggert, ditto for apparatus. At end of typesetter’s copy are Webby’s explanatory notes and Eggert’s textual notes that the typesetter repositioned to create the arrangement in the published volume.

    Edition, second proofs, with corrections.
    Front pages, some with diary of transactions between Eggert and collaborators, of several versions of the edition and the monograph, but the versions themselves discarded by Eggert in June 2013 as only of minimal interest.
