  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Muriel Reid, of Sydney, won a scholarship to carry out cancer research at the Royal North Shore hospital in Manchester at the age of 29. While in England she met her future husband John Kubale, also from Sydney, who was working as an engineer in London.

Her diary recounts her experiences in England, including her studies and social engagements. The letters cover the period of Muriel and John’s engagement (1934-5) and correspondence between them during the wartime years (1940-45), while John joined the British Army and Muriel returned with their children to Sydney. Whilst living in Sydney, Muriel returned to work as a pathologist at the Royal North Shore Hospital until the end of the war when they returned to England. Muriel and John lived in Stoke Poges until 1968 when they moved to the Isle of Skye. John died in Skye in 1984 and Muriel died at Haywards Heath, Sussex in 1991.

George Reid (1871-1964) was State Moderator of the Presbyterian Church. The diary is a record of his theological studies as a young man.
