    Robert Leslie Hunter was born in 1930. He was educated at schools in Brisbane and Sydney and graduated from the University of Sydney in Arts/Law. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1955, and a barrister four years later. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1974 and became a judge of the Supreme Court in 1994. He retired in 2002 and worked in professional consultancy until 2013. During this period he also bred horses on his property in the Liverpool Plains and became involved in campaigning against coal seam gas development. He was a member of the NSW Farmers Association mining task force and a member of the Ministerial Oversight Committee to set up a study for the potential impact of coal and coal seam gas development in the Namoi Catchment.
