    Edna Margaret Walling, garden designer and author, was born in York, England, and migrated to Australia in 1914. After studying at Burnley School of Horticulture, she worked as a gardener before starting a business designing gardens for large suburban houses and country estates. Markdale was her first New South Wales commission.
