  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Carron (1821-1876), botanist and explorer, was born in England and arrived in Sydney by the Royal Saxon in 1844. He worked as a gardener, and in 1848 accompanied Edmund Kennedy's expedition to Cape York as a botanist. Eight of the original explorers died of suspected starvation, another from accidental gunshot, and Kennedy himself was speared to death by an unknown Aboriginal man. Carron, convict William Goddard and an Aboriginal tracker known as Jackey Jackey, were rescued and survived. Carron later published a 'Narrative of an exploring expedition through part of Tropical Australia Along the East coast from Rockingham Bay to Cape York for the Government of New South Wales under the direction of E. B. Kennedy Esqr. Assistant Surveyor', 29 April-14 December 1848 (published in 1852). In 1855, Carron was appointed collector for the Sydney Botanic Gardens.

Janet Hauser is a botanical artist and founding member of the Botanical Artist’s Society of Queensland. Her artwork has been displayed in numerous exhibitions including those held at the Botanic Gardens Auditorium (Queensland) and the Queensland Herbarium.

In 2012 Hauser retraced the path of the 1848 13-man expedition led by Kennedy. Hauser was inspired to follow Carron's footsteps after learning he had lost the plant specimens collected whilst on the expedition. Hauser produced 37 drawings as part of the project; 32 were displayed in an exhibition held at the Port of Yamba Historical Society Yamba Museum, 13 August-3 September 2017, titled ‘Tribute to William Carron’.

The 21 drawings described here were part of the original 37.

Hauser used descriptions in Carron’s published work to identify the plants and produce the botanical drawings.
