    In 1878 James Blackwood (1832-1916), a Scottish shipping engineer, founded a firm of ships chandlers in Sydney. In 1899 it was registered as J. Blackwood and Son. The company gradually expanded and evolved to become industrial and engineers suppliers and steel merchants supplying a variety of goods throughout Australia and overseas. In 1953 J. Blackwood & Son Ltd became a public company and in 1956 it acquired A.E. Baker & Co Pty Ltd. The company continued to expand , acquiring a number of other companies and in 1984 it joined the Howard Smith Group. The company’s first premises were on Church Hill near St Phillip’s Church. In 1902 it moved to 62/64 Sussex Street and five years later to 86/88 Sussex Street. In 1966 the head office moved to Carter Street, Lidcombe and then in 1979 to Smithfield.
