  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Multiplex is a leading international construction contractor headquartered in Sydney, Australia. Operating in Australia, India, Canada, Europe and the Middle East, the company specialises in high rise buildings, stadia, high end residential, mixed use, education, health and civil infrastructure. The Chifley Tower is currently amongst the highest buildings in the Sydney CBD and occupies one of Sydney's most expensive and elevated sites, bought for $306 million by Australian businessman Alan Bond’s Bond Corporation in 1988. During its construction the building was known as Bond Tower, and replaced the old Commonwealth Government offices. The Bond Corporation declared bankruptcy in 1992 and the ownership was transferred to the Japanese construction company Kumagai Gumi. In 1993 the building was renamed Chifley Tower, after former Australian prime minster Ben Chifley and its location at Chifley Square. Global investment firm GIC acquired Chifley Tower and Plaza in 2005. The curved glass façade on the eastern side of the building was designed to represent a glass sail, inspired by Alan Bond’s celebrated America’s Cup victory in 1983. The base of the tower is curved to match the contours of the Qantas House, now the ANZ building, opposite Chifley Square. The tower is used primarily for commercial use, mostly financial institutions, law firms and corporations.
