  • Scope and Content
Autograph manuscript signed, ‘Copie d’un mémoire adressé à Son Excellence le Ministre de la Marine et des Colonies’, by Louis de Freycinet, Paris, August 1816 (4 pages, with Laage archive stamp, Carton 13, Dossier 274 C-1), being Louis de Freycinet’s retained copy of his proposal for the Uranie expedition. He suggests the continuation of his coastal exploration of Australia, such as Edel’s Land on the north west coast [around Broome] and Arnhem Land. He advocates for the use of a ‘pendule invariable’ and for the study of variation of gravity at various latitudes, hourly and daily temperature of water and air, variations of barometric pressure, tides, currents, winds, the natural history of plants, animals and mineral substances, and to remark on the customs and language of native peoples. He outlines the proposed timeframe (15 or 18 months), itinerary [which does not include Port Jackson], costs and staffing.
