    Maulyn Hsu Hatcher was born in Hong Kong in 1955 to Shanghai Chinese parents. Her family migrated to Sydney, Australia when she was a child. She worked in the family business, Kiu Foong Enamel Factory (HK) Ltd. Kiu Foong was founded by Hsu Long Sing in Shanghai in 1935 and from 1960 began expanding to Hong Kong, Thailand, Mali, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Jamaica and Australia. The business was succeeded by Hsu's two sons, Howard Ku Hua Hsu (Maulyn's father) and James Hsu, upon his death.
