    John Frederick Mann, (1819-1907), explorer and surveyor, was born in Lewisham, London. He served four years in the military before joining the Trigonometrical Survey of Britain. He left Britain in 1841 arriving in Sydney on 6 March 1842. He was appointed as a licensed surveyor on 1848 in the Surveyor-General's Department and posted to the Counties of Murray, St Vincent and Argyle. He produced reports which were later published in the Proceedings of the Geographical Society of Australasia, as well as several articles for Sydney newspapers regarding Australian history and Aboriginals.

  • Scope and Content
    Notebook and explanatory letter written by John Frederick Mann, explorer and surveyor. Letter advises that matters relating to language and customs were principally obtained from Long Dick of the Cammeray tribe. Dick was a son of King Bungaree and Queen Gooseberry. Notebook contains 22 pages of words and phrases in English and Gammeraigal languages, including nicknames of local magistrates and constables.
