  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In November 1979, the Sydney City Council issued a restoration brief for the Queen Victoria Building which was extended for a further two months. Seven days before the closing date of final tenders Malaysian developer Ipoh Garden Berhad put a bid together. A team was established between Architects Stephenson & Turner and Rice & Daubney, Engineers Meinhardt and Partners, Kuttner Collins & Partners for administration, with financial backing by IPOH Garden Berhad. Key conservation groups backed the plan. Negotiations about plans and leases continued for almost three years. On 1 August 1983 the Lord Mayor and IPOH Garden, signed a ninety-nine-year profit sharing lease to restore the QVB building with restoration work beginning the following year in 1984. This required the demolition of internal accretions including offices, floors and partition. A new underground carpark, linking tunnels and an interpretively reconstructed interior were also constructed. The QVB was reopened in 1986.
Joop Van Heusden (1920-2013) was a Dutch postwar and contemporary artist known for his poster designs.
