  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Jessie Matcham Pitt was born in 1840, the eldest daughter of George Matcham Pitt (1814-1896). His grandmother, Mary Pitt (nee Matcham) arrived in Sydney in 1801 as a free settler and received a 100-acre land grant at Mulgrave Place, Richmond. Jessie married William Mylam Nicholas Garling on 16 May 1868 and had five children. She died in 1887.

    Donor inherited the painting from her grandmother, Ida Roxburgh Fisher (nee Garling), daughter of Jessie Matcham Pitt.
