  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

James Milson (1783-1872) arrived in Sydney in the Albion in 1806. By June 1820 he was living on a grant of 100 acres (40 ha) at Pennant Hills, where he ran 40 cattle. In 1823-24 he was employed as 'keeper' of Government House. By 1829 his substantial landholdings included 220 acres (89 ha) at Castle Hill, 640 acres (259 ha) at Wollombi, 50 acres (20 ha) at North Shore, and 5 acres (2 ha) on Neutral Bay. In 1832 he built a reservoir for watering ships on the North Shore. In later years he acquired more land and was a keen yachtsman. Milson’s Point, the headland into Sydney Harbour on which the north pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge stand, and the suburb on this headland to the west of Kirribilli, are both named after James Milson. An abstract of title is a chronological record of the title history of a property including transfers, liens, mortgages, legal actions and other documents that are connected to that property. The abstract on offer was drawn up by John Dawson of John Dawson & Son, Solicitors, ca. 1873 and is a record of James Milson’s title to land on the north shore of Sydney Harbour between Careening Cove and Hulk Bay. It includes a copy of the grant by Sir George Gipps in 1839 and copies of James Milson’s will and two codicils. Intriguingly, the cover contains a handwritten note ‘Mr John Bailey Lot 5 sec 5’ and ‘1881’ which suggest that a portion of the land may have been acquired by John Bailey, the great great grandfather of the donor after Milson’s death. The abstract is evidence of James Milson’s status as a major landowner on Sydney’s north shore and would be a worthwhile addition to the Library’s holdings of Milson family papers.
