Ken Davis was born in Sydney in May 1955 and grew up in the Sydney suburb of Marsfield. He attended Epping Boys High and became involved in left wing political causes in his mid-teens. A lifelong gay activist, Davis has worked on campaigns and with groups such as the Gay and Lesbian Immigration Task Force (GLITF), the NSW Gay Trade Unionists Group and many others. With fellow activists from Sydney University Gay Liberation, he formed a coalition of lesbian, gay and progressive groups to plan events in Sydney in June 1978. These included a daytime protest march, film festival and late-night street procession dubbed ‘Mardi Gras’. This event grew in following years into the largest LGBTIQ+ cultural event in the southern hemisphere, known today as the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
Ken Davis was a founding member of Sydney’s Pride History Group (PHG) and this badge collection was housed at the Glebe rooms of PHG, and on occasion displayed at public events organized by PHG.
