Although unsigned, this amusing crowd scene can be attributed almost certainly to the artist, S.T. Gill. It depicts part of the inaugural cricket match played on the Outer Domain between the touring English First Eleven and a New South Wales side in 1862. This later became a regular event. The view is painted from within the covered grandstand and records, in painstaking detail, a wide cross-section of colonial society. Apart from the milling spectators, the artist has also shown the gaily decorated refreshment tents on the far side of the pitch together with nearby city landmarks. The women are dressed in fashionable crinolines topped with a neat jacket or shawl while most of the men wear top hats, still considered the most suitable headgear for urban occasions.
