  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Hawke's Bay was carrying the Otago Mounted Rifles Regiment and the Otago Infantry Battalion to Egypt. On the 1st November 1914 the Hawke's Bay, under Master J. C. Lidstone, assembled with the first convoy at King George's Sound, Albany Western Australia to transport the First Detachment of the Australian and New Zealand Imperial Expeditionary Forces; they arrived in Alexandria, Egypt on 3rd December 1914.

    The New Zealand Transport ships included HMNZT 3 Maunganui; HMNZT 4 Tahiti; HMNZT 5 Ruapehu; HMNZT 6 Orari; HMNZT 7 Limerick; HMNZT 8 Star of India; HMNZT 9 Hawkes Bay; HMNZT 10 Arawa; HMNZT 11 Athenic; HMNZT 12 Waimate.

    This is the handwritten signal log that recorded orders and "conversations" between ships of the First Detachment of the Australian and New Zealand Imperial Expeditionary Forces. The entries are mainly in pencil, with a few written in ink.
