  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Fairy Bower, near Manly, was named by early landowner Charles Hemington in 1858. It took its name from the idyllic nature of the bushland gully and creek that ran down to Cabbage Tree Bay and became a popular as a picnic and refreshment area. Marine Parade, from South Steyne past Fairy Bower and on to Shelly Beach, was constructed in the late 1890s.

    Although the vendor dated the painting to the 1890s, it is more likely that the work dates from around 1912, based on the design and style of the swimming costumes worn by swimmers in the central foreground.
