  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Charles Venn Pilcher was born in Oxford, England in 1879. He was ordained in 1903 in Worcester Cathedral. In 1906 he joined the staff of Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto, Canada, lecturing in Greek Testament. In 1936, Pilcher was invited by the Archbishop of Sydney, Dr Howard Mowll, to be assistant bishop. His work consisted of preaching in St Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney, teaching at Moore Theological College and being a member of the Board of Studies for Divinity degrees at the University of Sydney. Pilcher died in 1961.

    1. 'Australia' patriotic song by Charles Pilcher, undated. 1 manuscript score for voices in unison and piano (half a page) probably in the composer's hand, with typescript lyrics.
    2. Printed booklet: 'A pageant of early church history: general, Anglican, Australian: held in commemoration of the centenary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Cathedral Church of St Andrew, Sydney, 1837-1937', Town Hall, Sydney, 20-22 May 1937. This pageant included the singing of Pilcher's song 'The song of the pilgrim church' to words by Broughton.
    3. 'The song of the pilgrim church: via crucis via lucis', undated. 1 printed sheet with music for SATB by Pilcher and lyrics by Broughton.
    4. 'Australia our land' patriotic song by Charles Pilcher, Christmas 1940. 1 printed sheet of lyrics.
