  • General note

This work appears to have been commissioned by Matthew Dysart Hunter, a Scottish merchant who lived in Sydney from at least 1836. He had returned to Edinburgh by 1843. In 1842 he seems to have commissioned a number of drawings, and one painting, of Sydney. "The Old South Head Road above Rushcutters Bay, looking towards Paddington" was one of five pasted into an album since disbound -- one of them, a view of South Head by Jacob Janssen, is dated 1842 (see Phillips Fine Paintings Edinburgh 2 December 1994 lots 32 - 36 ML ref. Pictures Section. The catalogue notes: "... five lots were removed from Anton's Hill, Coldstream, former ... home of the late Lt. Col. Austin Bates, D.S.O., M.C, Director of the Cunard Steamship Co. Ltd ...). Dysart Hunter also bought a Conrad Martens oil painting "View from the Window" in 1842 -- see Elizabeth Ellis, Conrad Martens : Life and Art, SLNSW Press, 1994 p.162 (Ref. Q759.994/M377/3 Mitchell Library). These purchases would indicate that "The Old South Head Road above Rushcutters Bay looking towards Paddington" dates from before 1842.

Attributed to Garling on the basis of stylistic similarities to other examples of his work in the Mitchell collections -- see Mitchell Library Pictures Catalogue. This work is similar to topographical works in the Mitchell Collections, by an unknown artist presumed to be Garling cf. "Court House, Darlinghurst", ZDG SVIA/20 : "Moore's Wharf and Warehouse, Millers Point", ZDG VIA 26 : "View of Sydney from Woolloomooloo" [dated 1839], DG SV1/42 : "View of Sydney from Dawes Point" [dated 1839], DG SV1/47 : "Aust.n Sugar Comp.ys Works Canterberry N.S.W." DG SVIA/13 -- the inscription on this work is very similar to titling on Garling ship portraits cf. "Queen of the Thames", ZDG D3/11. Common to many of these works is a trait of exaggerating the height of buildings and the use of blue and red figures in foregrounds.
