Harold Joseph's father established the Tamworth Newspaper Co Pty Ltd in 1910 to buy out his own Tamworth Observer and another local newspaper. The newspaper changed its name to the Northern Daily Leader in 1921. Harold Joseph succeeded his father as managing director in 1947. During the second World War he was Squadron Leader and Chief Flying Instructor at the Central Flying School, a part of the Royal Australian Air Force, at Tamworth. After demobilization from the R.A.A.F. he became an active recreational flyer.
