Federation of the 6 colonies of Australia took place on 1 Jan. 1901 with the establishment of the Commonwealth of Australia. On that date the Duke of York opened the first Australian Parliament in Melbourne. Later in the year it was decided to send a contingent of mounted troops (The Federal or Commonwealth Contingent) to South Africa to take part in the Boer War. The first battalion, of what was to be called the Australian Commonwealth Horse, sailed in Feb. 1902.
S.S. "Orizaba" sank off Western Australia in Feb. 1905.
