  • Scope and Content
    Scrapbook comprises mainly mid- to late nineteenth century European produced images of European portraits and landscapes. Includes early christmas cards.

    f.23 One lithographed certificate presented to Mrs Alfred Douglass for her arrangement of skeleton leaves and flowers, which she exhibited at the Geelong Mechanics Institute Industrial Exhibition of 1862.
    Certificate, which has been trimmed, measures 26.4 x 21.3 cm. To each side, and beneath, certificate are two coloured lithograph columns, the left topped by a kangaroo and the right an emu. Beneath the two columns is an albumen photograph, measuring 7.1 x 6.8 cm, of a flower arrangement.

    ALfred Byerley Douglass was the eldest son of Mrs Alfred Douglass, the compiler of this album ML
    1608/90.
    Endpaper Albumen photograph of a model of Victoria, 36.3 x 52.7 cm. At lower right is printed ‘MODEL OF / VICTORIA / CROWN LANDS OFFICE MELBOURNE / 1868’.

    Contains eleven items, which came loose with the scrapbook.
    The majority are prints of European scenes. Some have possibly fallen out of the album.
    Two are watercolours - one is of S.Marco’s Square Venice, the other is a portrait of an unidentified girl. Both are probably late nineteenth century.
    One is an 1873 albumen photograph of the moon. The image measures 24.6 x 17.4 cm and is laid on a sheet 37.9 x 30.2 cm. A label fixed underneath the photograph reads “Photo: of moon, Great Melbourne Telescope. Date 4th Apl:/73 Moon’s Age. 7. 0 days”. A stamp at lower left reads “Melbourne Observatory No.47”. The photograph was taken by Joseph Turner cf. Joan Kerr ed., The Dictionary of Australian Artists 1770-1870, Oxford University Press, 1992.
    Amy Robsart (now MIN 329) was also loose in the album but has been removed for conservation reasons. A former mount has been preserved amongst the loose items.
