Alfred Brigden lived in Gulgong, NSW, until 1955 when he sold the family cordial business and, with his wife Gladys Lillian (nee Gruhl), settled in Sydney at Northmead, then North Parramatta. He had been a preacher, Sunday School teacher and Circuit Steward in the Methodist Church in Gulgong and was prominent in the local community through his involvement with The Far West Children's Scheme, St. John's Ambulance, the local hospital, the Masonic and Manchester Unity Lodges and the Rotary Club.
In 1956 he started the Gulgong and District Ex-Residents Reunion Association of which he was secretary. The organisation held biannual reunions in April and October at Parramatta Park. Mr Brigden kept in touch with many former residents and circulated notes he compiled giving news of their activities, health and deaths as well as historical information about the district. The notes are mostly chronological and also contain a record of his own activities in the community and details of travels with his wife.
