  • General note

Attributed to Frederick Garling by Garling family tradition - comparisons with other Garling watercolours in the Mitchell Pictures collections proved inconclusive

It is argued in Patricia McDonald & Barry Pearce ed.s, The Artist and the Patron, AGNSW, 1988 p.151 (Q759.994/70 Mitchell Library) that the scene in this drawing was a 1850s re-creation of a ca. 1830s event on the grounds that the costume is more of the 1850s period. The authors point to the similiarity in the style of the drawing and of the dress to the firmly dated 1856 drawing "Guests assembled at the wedding of Adelaide ... with Sloper Cox" SV/27 Mitchell Library Pictures Collection. The issue is unresolved. It is worth noting that Garling's employer, Collector of Customs Colonel John Gibbes, lived in Henrietta Villa in the 1830s and 1840s.

Inscribed in pencil on reverse "Dome Room Point Piper" to which is added in blue pencil "- Sydney - occassion of one of the many festivities give by Capt. Piper - a friend of Frdk Garling - Judge Advocate of Colony of NSW and Grandfather of Wllm Garling"

At lower right on reverse, also in pencil and probably relating to framing instructions is "Mr W. Garling"
On an old backing board kept with the watercolour is written in a later hand "Watercolour Drawing by F Garling, junior - Guests in the Dome Room of Captain John Piper's mansion; at Point Piper. F.G. was in his early 20's when this was painted circa 1830, after Piper had moved to Bathurst."
