  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Born in England, Maybanke Anderson arrived in Sydney in 1855 with her parents and brothers. She was educated as a teacher and in 1884 began a school, Maybanke College, which quickly established a reputation for its modern teaching methods and the success of its pupils in examinations. In 1891 she helped found the Womanhood Suffrage League of NSW. She was also a member of the Women's Literary Society and founder of the Australasian Home Reading Union. In 1894 she began publishing her own fortnightly newspaper Women's Voice. In 1898 she sold Maybanke College and a year later married Francis Anderson, professor of philosophy at Sydney University. Increasingly she devoted her time to university activities and writing pamphlets and articles for the press. She also produced several local histories and published Mother lore, a handbook on the education of young children.
